Thurat is thought to be an aboriginal word, the meaning of which is not really clear. William Govett named the area Thurat in 1833. I've always been fascinated by the names of the features in the Kanangra area - Mt Stormbreaker, Mt Cloudmaker, Mt High & Mighty - they're all wonderfully poetic and imposing.
