The tonality and texture of this photo evokes for me images of fossils, and gives this an ancient, almost timeless quality. In November, Ocean Beach teems with muttonbirds (short tailed shearwaters), whose breeding season starts in September. Shearwaters have one of the most amazing migrations in animal kingdom, travelling up to 30,000km a year. Circumnavigating the Pacific Ocean, they travel north, skirting Japan and the Kamchatka Peninsula, to the Bering Sea, and then follow the coast of Canada and the USA south, before crossing the Pacific to return to Tasmania and Bass Strait.

Shot on a Nikon D700 and an AF 200m f4 Micro.
