We often think of polar bears as white, however they appear slightly yellow-ish, almost a light blonde colour, and their skin is actually black. The long outer
guard hairs in their fur are actually transparent. They're hollow too, which helps trap air for insulation, but also scatters light in much the same way snow does.
This high reflectance is what makes them look white.
