Polar bear paws are enormous. They can be up to 30cm across, and they act like snow shoes in distributing the bear's weight as it walks over ice and snow. Despite their size and weight, polar bears can walk on thinner ice than a human adult, because of the size of their paws and the distribution of their weight over four limbs. The pads on the underside of their paws are covered in small, soft bumps, known as papillae, which help them grip the ice, and as you can see, there is a thick layer of fur on the underside of their feet as well, to provide insulation against the cold.
