Most of the trees in the Hudson Bay lowlands are black spruce, which are stunted in height due to the cold, and sculpted into what are known as krumholtz formations (from the German for crooked or bent wood), where the branches on the windward side of the tree are killed or stunted by constand strong wind. As a result, the tree takes on the shape of a banner or a flag. As you can see here, several of the trunks in this small stand of trees have no branches on one side - in this case the northern side facing the bay and the prevailing winds.
