Polar bears' hunting and eating patterns depend entirely on sea ice. Their staple food is the ringed seal, which is high in fat and calories. They hunt the seals by waiting for them to surface for air at a breathing hole, which they locate with their amazing sense of smell. They also stalk sleeping seals, and can move extremely quickly over short distances to grab a seal before it can escape back into the water. Because they are adapted for a life on the sea ice, they are particularly at risk from their habitat disappearing due to climate change.
